Product Description
Virgin MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) media are small, specially engineered plastic carriers designed to provide a large, protected surface area for beneficial bacteria (biofilm) to grow and thrive in wastewater treatment systems. Unlike recycled media, virgin media are manufactured from 100% brand-new, high-quality polymers, typically High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) or Polypropylene (PP), ensuring superior purity, durability, and a longer operational life.
Key Characteristics & Properties
Property
Description
Material (MOC)
100% Virgin High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) or Polypropylene (PP).
Color
Often white, which indicates purity and lack of chemical degradation from recycled additives.
Shape
Typically small, cylindrical or wheel-shaped, with internal and external fins or multiple holes (e.g., 19, 79 holes) designed to maximize surface area and promote efficient mixing.
Density
Engineered to be slightly less dense than water (around 0.94 - 0.96 g/cm), allowing them to remain suspended and move freely within the aerated treatment tank.
Surface Area
Provides a large protected surface area, often ranging from 400 m/m to over 1600 m/m, for microbial colonization.
Durability
Chemically resistant, UV-protected, and robust, offering a lifespan of over 10 years.
Self-Cleaning
The continuous, chaotic movement within the reactor causes old or dead biofilm to slough off naturally, making room for new, active bacteria and preventing clogging.
Function and Application
The primary function of virgin MBBR media is to enhance the biological treatment of wastewater. In a moving bed biofilm reactor, air injection or mechanical mixers keep the media suspended and circulated. As wastewater comes into contact with the established biofilm on the media's surface, microorganisms break down organic pollutants.
Applications include:
Municipal Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs): Used to manage large volumes of sewage efficiently.
Industrial Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs): Effective for treating high-strength wastewater from industries like food and beverage, chemical manufacturing, and pulp and paper.
Aquaculture & Fisheries: Helps maintain water quality by removing harmful ammonia and nitrates.
Upgrades/Retrofits: Can be easily added to existing conventional activated sludge tanks to increase treatment capacity without requiring new civil construction.
